National Trust for Historic Preservation Internship Project: Penn East Revitalization, Washington, D.C. | 2005

While at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, I reviewed historic real estate maps for a Southeast DC neighborhood.

During my internship at the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C. the summer after I completed my Master of City Planning degree, I conducted research to support a neighborhood group in Southeastern D.C. working to get their neighborhood designated as a local historic district. I reviewed Hopkins and Baist Real Estate maps, historic building permits, and current development data at the Library of Congress and National Archives. Subsequent to my work there in 2005, DC Preservation League listed the Barney Circle neighborhood on its list of Most Endangered Places in 2008 and 2009. The debate on the merits of a historic district continued amidst pressure for expanded housing options and amenities within close proximity of Capitol Hill.
