Sampan newspaper: “Asian Americans seek greater representation in local government”

“Manisha Bewtra, a Melrose city councilor running for mayor, said people don’t always connect the dots. Seeing someone they identify with in government is a cue they can engage.

“Bewtra added issues go beyond elected bodies. Leaders should think about the diversity of their boards and commissions, the diversity of municipal staff, and training for staff to better understand and work with different cultural groups.

“Along with better representation, cities also can engage community members through soft touches, such as Melrose’s Iftar, the Taste of Malden and [Boston City Councillor Michelle] Wu’s block party, Bewtra said.
