Shortly after my election to the Melrose City Council in 2017, where I was the first person of color to ever hold elected office, I was invited to be a co-keynote speaker with Aba Taylor, then the Executive Director of the Winchester Multicultural Network, at the city’s annual Martin Luther King Day Program on January 15, 2018. We were introduced by Melrose Human Rights Commission Chairperson Adam LaFrance. The keynote was in a “coffee chat” style where we interviewed each other about our experiences of leadership in predominantly white communities. Transcript not available, though the closed caption function in YouTube can be turned on or off. This video includes the entire evening program; our conversation starts at 32:09. Once you hit “play” it should automatically forward to the start of our conversation. The Melrose Free Press covered the event in this article.
